Retirement Calculator

Project your 401(k), 403(b), or IRA balance to retirement. Adjust for an employer match, your contribution rate, and an expected return.

%

A diversified stock index fund has averaged 7-10% nominal over the long run. We use a constant rate for simplicity.

The employer match is the highest-return investment of your life

If your employer matches 100% of your contribution up to 4% of salary, you are doubling your money the second the deposit hits. No stock index fund will ever beat that on a guaranteed basis. If you can not contribute everywhere else, contribute at least up to the full match.

About the 4% rule

The 4% rule is shorthand for "you can probably withdraw 4% of your balance in year one of retirement and adjust for inflation each year after, and not run out over 30 years." It is not a guarantee - just a useful sanity check. We show the monthly equivalent so the number is more intuitive.
